35,000 music-lovers head to Virgin Festival Toronto

TORONTO, Sept. 8 /CNW/ - The wait is over! Toronto's second annual Virgin Festival opened its doors today and welcomed festival goers to Toronto Island Park for the hottest music event of the year. The festival has grown in every way - more artists, more stages, and more than 35,000 fans will be on the Island for the 2007 Festival.

"Our first Canadian Virgin Festival in 2006 was a huge success and 2007 is upping the ante with a festival that's grown bigger and better," says Nathan Rosenberg, Chief Marketing Officer, Virgin Mobile Canada. "We're pumped to be welcoming more than 35,000 fans to the island for the largest music experience of the year."

Saturday's shows will start the festival with a bang, featuring headliners like multiple Grammy, Brit, and Academy Award nominee Bjrk, 2006 Mercury Prize winners Arctic Monkeys, and multiple Juno Award winner k-os. On the Future Shop Stage, fans can catch the Jon Levine Band - fresh from just having toured with superstar Nelly Furtado. On Sunday headliners include the legendary The Smashing Pumpkins, and 7-time Grammy nominees The Killers. The Future Shop Stage will have rising Brit band The Editors, whose 2006 tour with Franz Ferdinand pushed them to the top of the UK Album Charts. Overall, 62artists will be taking to the four festival stages - making it an unforgettable weekend of non-stop music.

"We've pulled together an incredible line-up and on-site experience that will blow people away," says Andrew Bridge, Director of Virgin Festivals, Virgin Mobile Canada. "With such a huge range of artists and genres we definitely have something for everyone. From indie and punk, electro pop and hip hop, plus world-famous DJs spinning, Virgin Festival Toronto will deliver a weekend everybody will remember."

Some Numbers to Remember

With so much happening at Virgin Festival, it's hard to keep track of it all! Here are a few key stats to keep in mind while checking out the festival:

<<
3,000 Kilometres of recycled toilet paper will be used at
Virgin Festival. That's enough to lay out a road of toilet paper
from Toronto to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

250 Tonnes of material used to construct the stages. Heavy.

64 Kilometres of cable will be used to wire up the stage. That's
enough to run cable up the Empire State Building 14 times!

62 The number of stellar artists that will be performing at
Toronto's Virgin Festival.

4 Stages for festival-goers to choose from when planning their
weekend schedules.

10 Truckloads of beverages (in recyclable containers, obviously)
that will be up for sale at Virgin Festival Toronto. That's a lot
of beverage.

80,000 Pounds of ice that will keep all those drinks cold - equivalent
to the weight of almost 27 RV trailers.

600 Number of concession staff that will be working at
Virgin Festival over the weekend.

1,000 Cool gifts up for grabs at the TRASHed :: Recycling Store for
