Mimos to introduce WiMAX products next year

(Business Times (Malaysia) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) MIMOS Bhd, a government-funded research and development (R&D) centre, plans to introduce its products for WiMAX technology as early as next year.

"I can't reveal the full details yet. We are in the midst of getting our patents approved," said Mimos chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah.

WiMAX is an emerging technology that allows high speed wireless Internet access over large areas.

It is believed that the products may include a chip that can receive both WiMAX and WiFi signals (dubbed WiWi), as well as last mile solutions that will provide rural areas with Internet connectivity.

In March this year, the WiMAX 2.3 GHz spectrum was awarded to Green Packet Bhd, YTL e-Solutions Bhd, Asiaspace dot com Sdn Bhd and REDtone International Bhd.

Abdul Wahab was speaking to the media after the opening of Mimos Technology Forum 2007 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. The forum was held in conjunction with the Mimos Innovation Week.
