Qualcomm to Lower CDMA Patent Fee in China
BEIJING, Dec 17, 2008 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) --
US-based CDMA technology patent holder Qualcomm, Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) has agreed to lower patent fee on China's mobile phone makers, disclosed a person close to CDMA network operator China Telecom on December 16.
Chinese CDMA patent users will have to enter into agreements with the US patent owner over the issue, said the person, declining to say how much the charges will be reduced. Presently, China's mobile phone makers are required to pay a 2.5% patent fee for CDMA mobile phones sold domestically and 7.5% for those sold abroad.
Companies that have reached contracts with Qualcomm for use of patent this year are not entitled to enjoy the new policy, according to an executive for Qualcomm China.
The patent fee reduction in China, the world's largest telecoms market, will help activate CDMA mobile phone makers and push the expansion of the global CDMA industrial chain, pointed out a market observer.
