China Mobile, biggest telecom advertiser in China in Q1

BEIJING, May 31, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- China Mobile (0941.HK; CHL.NYSE) became the leading advertiser of China's telecom industry in the first quarter of 2009, while China Telecom (0728.HK; CHA.NYSE) took the second place and China Unicom (0762.HK; 600050.SH; CHU.NYSE) fourth, according to Analysys International research.

After obtaining 3G licences, all three Chinese carriers must construct networks and promote their usage.

China Mobile took the lead since launching of its new 3G service brand for the new 3G standard in January and strengthened its marketing scheme to adhere to the brand's release.

China Telecom, with its weak user base in mobile services, kicked off its 3G marketing strategies before the issuance of 3G licenses, launched the personal service brand "e-surfing" (Tian Yi), and greatly added advertising input in November 2008.

After obtaining its 3G licence, the carrier adjusted advertising ideas and brand focus in the first quarter of 2009. Advertising expenses remained locked for the time.

China Unicom didn't launch marketing campaigns for 3G, but did prepare for the publishing of its 3G brand, which was later released at the end of April.

The top 10 advertisers in China's telecom industry in the first quarter are China Mobile, China Telecom, Nokia (China) Investment Co., China Unicom, Samsung, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications (China), Motorola (China) Electronics Ltd., Guangdong BBK Electronic Corporation, ZTE, and Inspur LG Digital Mobile Communications.
