Chinese-Mainland-oriented iPhones Get Witnessed

BEIJING, Jul 31, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Insiders lately saw simplified Chinese characters on the backs of some iPhones with a hard disk content of 16 GB, different from English letters and traditional Chinese characters on most iPhones.

With characters used in the Chinese Mainland, these new iPhones are compatible with the 3G WCDMA network under the mainland mobile operator China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (SEHK: 0762 and NYSE: CHU), insiders said.

A report said that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) sent a certain number of mainland-oriented iPhones to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for network access testing at the beginning of July 2009. And the network access license for such smart phones was said to be released weeks later if every went well.

This May, local regulators said that a type of WCDMA iPhones coded A1324 had passed the country's examination on wireless emission equipment models, signaling that iPhone A1324s can be sold in the mainland market for five years.
