All core businesses ring up growth in third quarter [New Straits Time (Malaysia)]


(New Straits Time (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis Bhd, the country's top mobile operator, posted a 1.9 per cent increase in revenue to RM6.66 billion for the nine-month period ended September 30 2012, from RM6.54 billion previously.



The growth was driven by contributions from all business segments, such as mobile services as well as fixed services.

Maxis, however, recorded a 17 per cent decline in third quarter net profit at RM442 million, mainly due to accelerated depreciation on its modernised network.


Its third quarter revenue was almost unchanged at RM2.21 billion, versus RM2.24 billion same quarter a year ago.

"We are pleased that this quarter we have shown growth across all our core businesses. We are now well positioned to strengthen future revenue streams, having launched several tariff initiatives for our customers, over the last nine months, in the areas of IDD rates, roaming, mobile Internet, postpaid and prepaid.

"All of which are beginning to bear fruit. It is also reassuring to see that revenue generating subscribers growing in both postpaid and prepaid categories.

"Maxis continues to lead innovation in the industry constantly introducing globally contemporary data products and improving overall consumer data experience on its networks, resulting in strong non-voice revenues which now stand at 45.4 per cent of mobile revenues.

"Large number of our customers use smartphones which we continue to seed in the market and access Internet actively, as a result of which nearly 63 per cent of our non-voice revenue comes from net usage.

"Improved values offered on traditional voice packages are stimulating usage leading to growth in voice revenues. This quarter revenues have also begun to stream in from our wholesale arrangements with U Mobile," said Maxis chief executive Sandip Das in a statement.

It also declared a third interim dividend of eight sen per share amounting to RM600 million to its shareholders.

For the quarter ended September 30 2012, the company added 78,000 new mobile customers. This extend its leadership has the largest mobile operator with more than 12.8 million subscribers. It also more than doubled its home services customers to 19,000 this quarter, compared with 9,000 customers in second quarter.

As for its wireless broadband business, it subscribers grew by 17,000 to 631,000 subscribers, compared with 614,000 customers in the second quarter.
