Lilee Systems Announces IEEE 802.15.4p Task Group Produces Baseline Proposal for Wireless Train Control

SANTA CLARA, CA, Dec 10, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Lilee Systems, the leading provider of advanced communication systems designed for the rail and rail transit industries, today announced that the IEEE 802.15.4p Task Group, founded and chaired by Lilee Systems' Vice President of Strategic Development Jon Adams, has developed the baseline for wireless links between trains or locomotives and track infrastructure. The IEEE Task Group will formalize its standards recommendations for Task Group review and approval during the first quarter of 2013.

"The IEEE 802.15.4p Task Group has achieved significant results as it creates its framework for locomotive and transit communication standards," said Adams. "Standards development can be a challenging matter. But, by bringing together competitors and opposing entities into a cohesive team we have made significant progress in creating standardized approaches to a variety of challenges. Together we are developing recommendations for wireless systems that will support the networked communications necessary to ensure that trains do not 'exceed limits authority' or exceed speed restrictions. In the future we hope these standards can also evolve to encompass communication to bridges, overpasses or other infrastructure that can impact the safety of fast-moving trains." The IEEE 802.15.4.p Task Group has 90 participants from more than 60 organizations worldwide including US Class 1 railroads, rail and transit systems integrators, U.S. Federal Rail Administration, Federal Transit Administration and Department of Transportation, and transportation agencies in other regions of the world. It has been chartered to expand the very successful existing IEE 802.15.4 standard to include sensor, control, and information transfer applications for rail transit entities.

Harvey Glickenstein, vice president land transportation of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society, pointed out the strong interest the Vehicular Transportation Society has in Positive Train Control and stated, "We are especially pleased to participate in this task group which will expand the options for providing Positive Train Control in the United States and elsewhere in the world in a non-proprietary manner. Although the charter specifically uses the words rail transit, the proposed standard would be available for use by both rail transit systems and railway systems as well as people movers throughout the world." Norman Y. Mineta, former Secretary of Transportation, U.S. Government and board of director for Lilee Systems, also underscored the importance of establishing communication standards for the locomotive and transit industry: "We are on the cusp of a new revolution in transit safety and the IEEE 802.15.4p Task Group is undertaking a critical initiative by facilitating collaboration among diverse interests. I'm very enthusiastic about the new levels of safety that will undoubtedly be produced as a result of the new communication standard." This baseline proposal for IEEE 802.15.4p will be highlighted during a presentation delivered by Mr. Adams during the 1st Annual ACM/ISS/IFAC/TRB International Conference on Connected Vehicles (ICCVE 2012), December 12-16, 2012, China National Convention Center, Beijing, China.
