Puncak Semangat has a `good business proposal' [New Straits Time (Malaysia)](New Straits Time (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) KUALA LUMPUR: Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd has a good business proposal and should be given a chance to "excite" the local telecommunications market, says the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Puncak Semangat, which is owned by Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al- Bukhary, is one of eight companies awarded by the MCMC last week with the 2600 MHz (megahertz) spectrum, which will allow them to provide 4G services with speeds in excess of 100 mbps (megabits per second). 4G is mobile broadband services delivered using the next generation mobile broadband technologies, including Long Term Evolution (LTE) and WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access). The eight companies are Celcom Axiata Bhd, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd, Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd, Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd, REDtone Marketing Sdn Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd. MCMC chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said Puncak Semangat gave a good proposal like everybody else and deserves to be given a chance. "You ask me why...I ask you why not and we have the prerogative." "Puncak Semangat, along with the others, gave a good business value proposition," he told reporters and analysts here yesterday after its latest updates on the country's digital transformation. Mohamed Shahril was commenting on the opposition party DAP's recent move to question the decision by MCMC to award the largest share of the 4G bandwidth to Puncak Semangat. The DAP also questioned why Puncak Semangat was given the largest chunk when it has zero track record in the industry. Puncak Semangat was awarded the 40 MHz bandwidth for the 4G long- term evolution spectrum, the highest share among the eight companies. The others received 20MHz of bandwidth each. "Consumers deserve the best services, best connectivity, high- speed downloads, and better quality audio and video. So the eight companies will give better excitement to the market and better choices for customers. "Technology is best when you don't notice it ... besides how much more can you pay to download one gigabit of video. It's time to open up the market and bring in new players." He said telecommunication companies have also been complacent for several years and only now they are collaborating to provide the various platforms to work with each other. "So these eight companies should be given a chance as they also have the best business proposition." Sharil said the bandwidth allocated to the other companies, including Puncak Semangat, are much smaller compared to what the big telecommunication players such as Celcom, Maxis and Digi have in total.
