China Mobile Plans to Pilot Internet TV Business Next Year

BEIJING, Dec 18, 2012 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) has clearly planned Internet TV business and is expected to pilot it in January 2013, according to a person with knowledge.

In fact, the company has prepared for a long time for the business. It established a special group responsible for the project, drafted a scheme developing OTV Internet TV technologies, communicated with most broadcasting TV license holders and reached initial cooperation agreements with them.

Before then, CMCC was awarded a license by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) to launch information network-based broadcasting service. The license stipulates that CMCC is responsible to authorize China Mobile Ltd. (NYSE: CHL, SEHK: 0941) to operate Internet audiovisual programs and distribute mobile TV business. It is said that CMCC aims to develop the Internet TV business into a broadband video OTT business that can ably compete with rivals' IPTV businesses.
