BRIEF: Govt should not enter into TV broadcasting and distribution: Trai

NEW DELHI, Dec 28, 2012 (Mint - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has recommended that the government -- Centre or state -- and the departments and companies owned by them should be barred from entering broadcasting and distribution of television channels.

Trai also said that the government must keep an arm's length distance from Prasar Bharti, the state-owned public broadcaster. The authority recommended that measures should be taken to ensure functional independence and autonomy of Prasar Bharti.

Trai released the recommendations on "Issues related to entry of certain entities in to the business of broadcasting and/or distribution of TV channels" on Friday and put them up on its website after the ministry of information and broadcasting sought its recommendation on the issue on 30 November.

The Authority has said that in case some government bodies have been allowed to enter this business, they should be provided an appropriate exit route.
