China,France,South Africa : BAIDU partners with FRANCE TELECOM [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Chinese website Baidu is partnering with France Telecom to develo a browser for low-end Android-Abased handsets being sold in parts of Africa and developing Gulf countries.

With its 'Orange' mobile services arm, the French national operator, France Telecom (FT), is the third-largest mobile operator in the African region and has over 80 million subscribers.

The new Baidu-engineered web browser app will be made available in-country pre-loaded on Android-based smartphones by FT's Orange operators. For users not on Orange networks or without connections or affiliations to FT, the self-same web-browser app will be offered as an Android download.

FT's logic behind all this is that the low data transfer speeds that pertain on many African mobile networks increases the difficulty of supporting the type of web access that is now usually available in the more developed parts of the world. Hence it is collaborating with Baidu to offer consumers access to a sub-set of part of the web.

The system works by substantially compressing the volume of data that is currently required when accessing and browsing popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter and thus takes a load off already stretched network infrastructure.
