China : China Telecom and Huawei unveil world's first commercial deployment of SDN in carrier networks [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Beijing branch of China Telecom (Beijing Telecom for short), and Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that they have jointly deployed the world's first commercial software-defined network (SDN) in which SDN technology was successfully applied to its Internet Data Center (IDC) networks. Beijing Telecom also unveiled a range of new IDC services based on the Huawei-developed SDN solution.

"We are glad to cooperate with Huawei in the SDN field and successfully commercialize the technology. We hope these new services can create more value for our customers," said Xu Hong, the Vice GM of Beijing Telecom.

"Huawei has extensive and successful collaboration with China Telecom in many areas. The deployment of SDN-based IDC innovations demonstrates China Telecom's foresight in cutting-edge technologies and Huawei's strength in SDN. As a leader in SDN, Huawei will continue to promote SDN standardization and commercialization to help operators excel in the SDN era," said Zha Jun, President of Huawei's Fixed Network Business Unit.

SDN technology has attracted increasing industry attention as cloud computing applications proliferate. Operators' IDC business models are under pressure to shift from simple sales of bandwidth resources to Data Center as a Service (DCaaS). Although Beijing Telecom's IDC is already the "data hub" for north China, the operator has taken the lead in deploying SDN technology on its IDC network to further enhance its competitiveness. Based on collaboration with Huawei, Beijing Telecom has delivered a service-centric IDC network and new business model focusing on both bandwidth resources and value-added services. The SDN-based IDC network represents a world first, ground-breaking implementation of a commercial carrier-grade SDN. SDN and IDC are essential to future network architecture, and this practice symbols significance to the IDC industry and the entire telecommunication industry.

Based on the SDN enabled IDC network, Beijing Telecom released a range of innovative IDC services such as DC-one for virtual resource services, DC-care for assurance services, DC-keeper for auxiliary services like detailed traffic reporting, and DC-private for customized services. The service-centric IDC network architecture effectively meets service customization requirements of tenants, improves IDC resource utilization and operations, and optimizes network O&M efficiency, giving Beijing Telecom a competitive edge on the IDC market.
