China : CHUNGHWA Telecoms NFC smartphone payments Okayed by Visa [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's biggest wireless carrier, said that it has received a security certification from card issuer Visa for digital credit cards that use near-field communication (NFC) technology on smartphones.

The certification from the world's biggest credit and debit card company means Chunghwa Telecom will be able to issue virtual cards through over-the-air downloads, enabling users to simply tap their NFC-enabled phones on a compatible reader to make payments.

The company said that card issuing will be carried out on Chunghwa Telecom's own Trusted Service Manager, a system that helps service providers securely distribute and manage contactless services for their customers using mobile operator networks.

Chunghwa Telecom said that it intends to team up with local partners including banks to jointly launch commercial services based on NFC technology in the near term in a bid to launch an NFC ecosystem in Taiwan.

Chunghwa Telecom started a trial project for NFC-based mobile payments in 2012 that enabled subscribers with Android handsets featuring the technology to make payments on Taipei's metro system as well as in selected retail outlets.

The company established the Asia NFC Alliance in February this year together with Japanese carrier KDDI, SK Planet of South Korea and Hong Kong Telecommunications Corporation to boost cross-border mobile payment services by using a shared NFC tag specification, brand mark and platform.
