WhatsApp lets you know when messages are read; voice calls next? [Mobile 88 Online (Malaysia)]

(Mobile 88 Online (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) If you are a WhatsApp user, you might have noticed the small but beneficial change recently added to the OTA messaging platform: the double check marks next to your sent message now will glow blue once they have been opened by the receiver.

Many users of the popular chat and group message platform have mistakenly assumed for years that receiving two check marks on your sent message means that the text, audio, or video file had been viewed by the other side.

The blue double checks are the first indicator of when the other user has actually seen your sent message, an alternative to the Last Seen box below the user’s screen name in within the app.

Furthermore, holding down (or long press) on the message with the highlighted blue check marks will call up an information option, which lets you know the time the message was read or played- and in a group chat scenario, lets you know which of the members in your group have already observed the update you just sent.

Aside from a redesigned user interface update in recent months, this ‘just read’ indicator is the most significant change since the popular messaging app was acquired in a multi-billion dollar deal by Facebook.

Next up is expected to be the long-awaited free VOIP calls addition to WhatsApp, which might finally offer free voice calls over mobile internet, much like what competitors like Viber and Skype have been offering. Screenshots and code, purportedly of the new VOIP service have popped up on the  Dutch website Droidapp.nl, and while this new feature has yet to be officially confirmed by WhatsApp, it definitely looks like it is in the works.

All updated versions of WhatsApp for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, should already feature the new ‘Just Read’ feature.
