Toshiba America Employees Participate in Ninth Annual Global CSR Month

In December, Toshiba Corporation and its worldwide group of companies, including Toshiba America, Inc., are celebrating CSR (News - Alert) Month. Events throughout the month will underline Toshiba Group's commitment to management grounded in corporate social responsibility, recognize achievements in the last year and encourage participation in a wide range of volunteer activities by all of the Group's 200,000 employees.

Held every December since 2006, CSR Month reminds employees and stakeholders around the world of the importance Toshiba attaches to turning its guiding principles-committed to people, committed to the future-into real engagement with society, through events and activities that raise awareness and contribute to the community.

A highlight this year is Toshiba Group employee support of the United Nations' International Volunteer Day on December 5. Employees will participate in volunteer activities to positively contribute to their communities. In the United States, nine Toshiba America Companies are participating in a shoe drive with Soles4Souls as part of the Toshiba Global Social Contributions Action initiative.

More than 5,000 pairs of shoes have been collected for the Nashville-based nonprofit, which collects new and used shoes and clothes and distributes them via direct donations to people in need and by provisioning qualified micro-enterprise programs designed to create jobs in disadvantaged communities.

"I am delighted we were able to collect thousands of shoes for the Soles4Souls program, one of the initiatives we are undertaking in support of Toshiba's Global Day of Action, which will go to support underprivileged people around the world. I'm thrilled to be a part of Toshiba Group's 200,000 employees coming together to make an impact together globally," said Mr. Masaaki Osumi, Chairman and CEO of Toshiba America, Inc.

In addition to the shoe drive, U.S. employees are involved in activities including local charity holiday giving campaigns benefitting children and underprivileged families.

A wide-range of activities are also being held around the world. In Singapore, local Toshiba companies are supporting MelroseHome which provides a supportive environment for children between the ages of four and 18 years old, who require care and protection in a residential setting; in Brazil, employee activities focus on helping the homeless; in France, three Toshiba Group companies are organizing volunteer activities; in Germany, volunteers are helping the regeneration of a disaster-hit forest; and in China, 30 Toshiba Group companies are focused on recycling efforts and reducing paper use and food waste.

A driving force behind Toshiba's volunteer day is Hisao Tanaka, Toshiba's President and CEO. Since his appointment in June 2013, Mr. Tanaka has repeatedly emphasized CSR as the guiding force for Toshiba Group's approach to management. In his message announcing this year's CSR Month, Mr. Tanaka commented: "All Group employees worldwide are encouraged to participate in activities that contribute to their local community, and to make sizable impacts that could not be achieved by an individual acting alone. What each individual can do is small, but a groundswell of social contributions can be generated if all 200,000 Toshiba Group employees join forces. I am looking forward to an exciting day of events on December 5."

On December 10, the annual Toshiba Group CSR Conference will be held at Toshiba's Tokyo headquarters, culminating in an awards ceremony to recognize outstanding achievements in CSR activities over the last year. The Group received more than 1,400 nominations and awards will be presented to 14 companies and six individuals.
