3G Eyes China's Burgeoning Mobile Internet, VoIP Markets
By Raju Shanbhag

China’s 3G.cn reportedly says that the communist nation’s telecom industry has ventured into the era of 3G, as 3G licenses that had been put on hold until now are being released in 2009.

After 2.5G, 3G is the third generation of tele-standards and technology for mobile networking. With 3G networks, operators can provide a wide variety of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency to their customers.

They can provide services such as wide area wireless VoIP, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment.

With 600 million mobile users, a 3G revolution in China will open the floodgates of opportunities for mobile internet service providers, opines 3G.cn. In fact, under the current 2.5G network, the company has offered quasi-3G Internet surfing services for mobile users. The company has a total number of 80 million registered users so far. With the introduction of 3G mobile, the company expects to attract more than 100 million Chinese mobile users in the near future.

Yuqiang Deng, chief executive officer of 3G.cn, said, “Crisis means turning point, when the Internet is in deep water, mobile Internet turns out to be an unexpected oasis.”

Even with the current financial crisis and downsizing tendencies around the world, 3G.cn is going to invest money and personnel to meet the challenges and opportunities of what it calls “the new 3G era.”

In May 2006, China Telecom announced its plan to offer 3G services about seven or eight months after receiving its 3G license, based on trials of the 3G standard TD-SCDMA. The operator has built 70 stations to undergo TD-SCDMA tests in Baoding, ebei Province, in northern China. China Telecom is looking for non-voice services like IPTV (News - Alert) and broadband Internet to drive growth, and has been working with Shanghai Media Group on jointly test running IPTV services in Shanghai since late 2005.
