Hong Kong Gains Arbinet IP Exchange

New Jersey-based Arbinet, a global voice and IP communications provider, has expanded its global footprint by inaugurating a new IP exchange in Hong Kong. According to an announcement made last week, the IP exchange, located the MEGA-i Data Center in Hong Kong, is fully operational and has already started connecting Internet service providers with customers.

The Hong Kong IP exchange is equipped with Arbinet's (News - Alert) IP transit supply solution that allows service providers such as ISPs, VoIP operators, ASPs and content providers to directly connect to multiple global and regional Tier 1 ISPs such as Telekom Malaysia.

Buyers will get several benefits from the Hong Kong exchange including simple IP supply management, network cost savings and optimized global Internet routing performance. The first set of buyers would be connected by the end of this year. By that time, the reach of the exchange would be expanded to customers in the HKCOLO (News - Alert) Sinofavour data center.

The decision to open an exchange in Hong Kong is based on research findings that point towards a growing demand of and IP communications services in East Asia.

"Hong Kong has emerged as the second largest Internet hub in Asia and is a vital gateway to China," commented Alan Mauldin, research director, TeleGeography. "Our research has indicated that Intra-Asian Internet traffic has grown nearly 65 percent annually between 2004 and 2008."

Arbinet offers a unique selling plan to its customers. Under this plan, Arbinet acts as a "one-stop shop" for paid peering and IP transit by allowing buyers to purchase IP transit from multiple suppliers through a single connection.

The company is a popular transaction platform where buying and selling of voice and IP telecommunications capacity takes place. Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC (News - Alert)) recently reported that Arbinet has crossed the 1000-member milestone during the first quarter of this year, as a result of its expansion efforts in emerging markets.
