NComputing, an end-to-end desktop virtualization company, has announced that its virtual desktop solutions have been selected to supply a massive computer education program in India’s northwestern state of Rajasthan.

The program involves deploying computer labs in 2,000 secondary schools throughout 33 districts in the state to give computer learning and information technology access to lots of schoolchildren for the first time.

Giving details, company officials said that each of the schools will have a 10-seat computer lab, made possible by attaching NComputing X550 virtual desktop devices and vSpace desktop virtualization software to a PC.

“By investing in the adoption of ICT in schools and by deploying progressive solutions such as NComputing virtual desktops, the quality and access to education and information is increased many-fold for literally hundreds of thousands of children.” said Manish Sharma, Vice President, APAC, NComputing, while addressing a press conference here.

“We are proud to be part of this program,” said Sharma.

Technology providers Compucom and Pearson Education Services are also involved in the roll-out of this deployment.

S K Surana, Managing Director, Compucom said, “We are pleased to partner with NComputing. The combination of NComputing cost-effective shared computing solutions with our world-class education services is a winning combination for this initiative; and could be easily replicated for public and private educational institutions across the state.”

Srikanth Iyer, COO, Pearson Education Services in a statement commented. "At Pearson, we are committed to fulfilling the educational needs for millions of children in schools across the country by providing the   highest quality of content and technology.  Working with NComputing we have been able to resolve the challenge of affordable access to computing for government schools in Rajasthan, especially in rural and under-served areas”.

“The technology also delivers a very positive green impact too,” said Iyer.Company officials said that the NComputing solution is based on a simple fact: today’s PCs are so powerful that the vast majority of students only use a small fraction of the computer’s capacity. NComputing desktop virtualization solution taps this unused capacity so that it can be simultaneously used by many students.

Each student connects their own monitor, keyboard and mouse to an NComputing device which is then connected to the shared PC. Each student gets a full PC experience.
