India Department of Telecommunications Selects Syniverse to Provide Mobile Number Portability

Syniverse Technologies has been selected by the India Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to implement mobile number portability (MNP) services in the country.

Syniverse (News - Alert) will be handling this project along with Telcordia Technologies.

The DoT has been contemplating the introduction of number portability in India. Number portability refers to the facility of retaining the same mobile number even if the subscriber changes service providers. Since this service is currently now available in India, it is difficult for the subscriber to change numbers even if they are unhappy with the service or the service is not available in specific area.

The DoT divided the country into two geographic zones for number portability implementation because of the enormity of the project. The department has divided each zone into 11 service areas that represent cities within the zone. While Zone 1 covers the northern and western regions of India, Zone 2 will cover south and east parts.

“It is a tremendous honor to be selected to provide number portability in India,” said Raymond Cheung, Executive Vice President and CEO for Syniverse Asia Pacific. “Syniverse’s proven track record of implementing MNP in countries that include Singapore, the United States, Canada and Hong Kong will help ensure Indian operators have an efficient, cost-effective solution that also will benefit their subscribers.”

Enabling the transfer of telephone numbers when subscribers wish to keep their numbers when changing from one operator to another, Syniverse will maintain an accurate, rapid and seamless number porting process for both Indian operators and their subscribers. The company will provide services in the areas of Delhi, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat and seven others.

Recently, the company launched its Internet Packet eXchange Network Transport solution (IPX) for global operators. With the help of this new solution, global operators can keep up with increasing volumes while maintaining quality of service for subscribers. Using single connection within an IP-based communications environment, this new solution will help mobile operators to use one access point to utilize several Syniverse network and hubbing solutions.
