A developer of RF over glass, or “RFoG,” and passive optical networking, or “PON,” systems for CATV, telecom and private network operators across the globe, Alloptic recently announced that its edge10 OLT can now interoperate with ONT designs which are based on EPON chipsets manufactured by PMC-Sierra (News
) and Teknovus.
Interoperability is an important step in order to make EPON work to scale for network operators. This will give them the necessary space and flexibility to pick any vendor’s application specific or best in class ONTs, be it from Alloptic (News
) itself or PMC-Sierra or Tecknovus. The resulting level of functionality is quite unparalleled when working with Alloptic RFoG systems. This combination helps network operators choose not only DOCSIS but also EPON customer site equipment.
With ONTs achieving interoperability through the channel of a common OLT, network operators can prop up a large number of applications and customer segments using the same existing framework. Different vendors can manufacture ONTs which suit different market needs. This result in ONT systems that are custom fit and yet cost efficient. Taking full advantage of the Alloptic edge10 OCT helps multiple ONTs to be installed on the same fiber framework, even on the same PON.
According to Shane Eleniak, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Alloptic, the company continues to push technology forward, driving paradigm shifts in how to deploy cost-effective FTTx systems.
“It has been great to work with PMC-Sierra and Teknovus in bringing interoperability to market and pushing the status quo in EPON developments,” Eleniak said.
PMC-Sierra also said that, with this step taken by Alloptic to make their OLT compatible with ONT designs, a fully interoperable EPON system has been created. This system can now be made available for large scale MSO markets with making use of expensive proprietary software which will also put tabs on accessibility and increase costs. PMC-Sierra has also consistently directed its efforts towards providing fully standard compliant products in every FTTH market they have presence in.
Teknovus too has placed on record their excitement at the prospect of working with Alloptic. Alloptic has a marked presence in the EPON and RFoG segments. By allowing its edge10 OLT to work with the cable world as well, MSOs can now achieve the same level of large scale EPON deployment which is the norm in countries like China, Korea and Japan.
