Bitstream's BOLT SDK Powers Next Generation Mobile E-mail Service in Asia

Bitstream (News - Alert), which develops software technologies and applications for the graphic art and mobile communications industries, announced its cloud computing architecture, now available as software development kit (SDK), is being used for mobilizing next generation email services on a wide number of mobile phones in Asia.

The BOLT SDK enables carriers, handset manufacturers and other service providers to build feature rich Java ME applications that can work just as well as on entry-level feature phones as they do on high-end smartphones.

It also allows any company with Web-based content, such as media companies, to produce mobile Java apps that run on a vast majority of mobile phones already in the market.

“Although mobile phones are becoming ‘smarter’ and more capable, the vast majority of mobile devices still do not have the processing power and storage needed for feature-rich applications,” said Sampo Kaasila, vice president of research and development at Bitstream, in a statement.

The cloud computing architecture BOLT SDK places the processing power and the resulting ability to execute advanced features inside the cloud, allowing even the most basic of mobile phones to deliver superior Web browsing.

“This same cloud computing architecture can be used to enable a wide variety of other applications, and Bitstream is making it available to other service providers as a software development kit,” Kaasila added.

BOLT SDK can be used to build robust Web applications delivered through users’ own custom user interfaces. The architecture supports Web apps written in HTML5, JavaScript and other Web programming languages. Additional features supported include downloading files, desktop style layout and delivering high performance on resource constrained devices.

Company officials say Bitstream’s customers leveraged the BOLT SDK to produce a mobile email service designed to reach and be used by more than 500 million Java ME mobile phone users in Asia.

The email service works across virtually all mobile phone platforms and nearly all mobile phones in the market, including all entry level phones. It can also support new phone platforms and models as they are introduced.

Earlier in February, Bitstream announced released version 5.4 of Pageflex iWay product. This new release is focused on enhancing the quality, stability and user experience of the Pageflex iWay product.
