HDTVs Second Most Desired Device Next to Smartphones in Asia Pacific: Report
By Narayan Bhat

High definition television is the second most desired device after smartphone in the consumer electronics market in Asia Pacific, finds market analyst firm ABI Research (News - Alert).

In a survey conducted by the research firm, many Chinese consumers have stated that they have plans to purchase HDTVs over the next six months.

However, in the consumer electronic market, Smartphone is most popular with nearly 60 percent of respondents talking of buying the device. But nearly 43 percent of respondents expressed their eagerness to purchase HDTVs.

Purchasing intent was similar in South Korea, says ABI Research, with smartphones and HDTVs representing the top two device categories at 47 percent and 22 percent of respondents, respectively.

Even in India, as many as 35 percent of respondents showed interest in buying smartphones, while 29 percent said they would purchase normal mobile handset.

Yet 27 percent of others said they would buy high definition television sets.

Considering the current economic conditions, developing markets will continue to serve as key targets by many CE companies.

“The maturing North American and Western European markets, in conjunction with the worldwide economic situation, are making growth increasingly difficult for many companies,” said the research firm’s analyst Jason Blackwell.

As expected, a considerably higher number of US and Western European respondents claimed to have no purchase intentions over the next six months.

China continues to hold considerable growth opportunities, but one of the key challenges for international companies is penetrating a market that tends to favor domestic brands, says the research firm.           Another interesting finding by ABI Research is that consumers in China and South Korea are increasingly choosing the goods manufactured by their domestic companies.

Between 50 and 46 percent of South Korean respondents claimed to own Samsung (News - Alert) and LG HDTVs, respectively; the next closest TV manufacturer was Sony at a mere 3 percent.

Similar trend could be seen in China with Changhong, Haier, HiSense, Konka (News - Alert), Skyworth, and TCL among the top 12 most common HDTV brands owned by respondents.  In India the results were mixed, with Sony, Samsung, LG, and Philips (News - Alert) rounding out the top four brands listed by respondents.
