In a joint venture of Verizon (News - Alert) and M1 Ltd, a complex fiber optic expansion project has been completed in northern and western parts of Singapore. The fiber-optic ring now extends upto160 kilometers (100 miles). This has increased the network coverage and doubled the capacity of the company for enterprise customers.

An advanced optical technology has also been deployed to meet customer bandwidth requirements in Singapore. ROADM (News - Alert) (reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer), is a communications equipment used in this project. With its dynamic and flexible capabilities, network speeds of 40 Gbps to 100 Gbps will be supported with the market growth. Six additional data centers can now be accessed by Verizon.

Infrastructure investment has maximized with this expansion. Customer traffic in Singapore is placed directly on its own network to better serve customers. This enables traffic management and issues can be fixed even before the services are impacted.

In a release, Yali Liu, executive director of global network planning at Verizon, said, "A strategic gateway between Europe and Asia has been created due to Singapore's geographic location for our global customers. The expansion benefits our global and regional customers.

We can meet the current and future needs of customers by combining the additional capacity, access to network facilities, advanced optical network technology, and future bandwidth scalability.”

Customers can now access strategic network facilities such as submarine-cable landing stations and data centers thus taking advantage of the company’s global mesh network. In the event of a cable cut or network disruption, the mesh network architecture can reroute traffic by providing additional network paths.

Liu also said that, "Customers have massive bandwidth and capacity requirements for their applications in emerging markets like Singapore. By designing and building robust dynamic networks, we can support their growing demands and also the onus is on us to stay ahead of our customers' needs. "

Verizon Communications Inc. is a global leader in delivering broadband, wireless and wire line communications services to consumer, business, government, and wholesale customers. Over most advanced fiber-optic network in the US, Verizon provides converged communications, information and entertainment services. For 150 of all Fortune 500 companies, it delivers integrated business solutions.
