BroadLight, a leading supplier of fiber access processors, recently announced in a press release that it has joined hands with Korea’s National Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, ETRI (News - Alert) to ensure a fully standardized XGPON (ITU-T G.987) initial deployment in Korea.

Both the companies will use their existing XGPON OLT and ONT technology for end to end interoperability testing based on efforts by FSAN to launch the first worldwide XGPON interoperability event.

“BroadLight’s collaboration with ETRI is an important initiative towards promoting XGPON technology in the Korean market,” said Youngsun Kim, VP Honam Research Center of ETRI, in a statement. ”Collaborating with BroadLight, we can ensure XGPON’s first commercial trial will be successful.”

“Aside from this being a great opportunity for BroadLight to contribute its knowhow in end to end PON solutions, it will provide us with further insight into the existing challenges for market requirements in relation to BroadLight’s own product development,” said Didi Ivancovsky, Founder and VP Carriers Strategy at BroadLight.

BroadLight is a leading provider of highly integrated networking and embedded processors enabling fiber grade quality of service delivery for central office and customer premise equipment. The company reportedly had $40 million in sales in 2010, and it apparently feels that now is the time to expand to other markets in the field, or at least defend itself from pending competitors.

Recently, Broadlight (News - Alert) Inc. deployed its new product line, Helios embedded processors, with China Telecom (News - Alert) Corporation's (NYSE: CHA; HKSE: 00728) high quality and bandwidth fiber access services. The dealsize could reach a few million dollars a year, but the real achievement is strategic. With the new generation processors, Broadlight will provide a comprehensive fiber optic solution that also supports its rival EPON (Ethernet passive optical network) and standard Ethernet protocols. China Telecom, and Chinese telecommunications equipment vendors in general, are longstanding Broadlight customers for its legacy products.
